iSeries v6r1 and v6r1m1 end-of-support on the 30th of September 2015
IBM has announced end of marketing was December 9th, 2014. IBM will continue supporting clients with v6r1 through the extended support option, but this comes at additional costs over existing software support charges.
For those users currently on IBM System i (iSeries AS/400) Operating Systems 6.1 or 6.1.1 (aka V6R1, V6R1M1), arrangements will have to be made to migrate to 7.1 before the 30th of September 2015 if they wish to remain in support. This venerable operating system, v6r1, became available in March of 2008.
Curbstone, as usual, will continue to support our software on V6R1 long after IBM ends support. We find that many of our customers have compelling reasons to remain on older IBM i OS versions, and we will not terminate support just because IBM does. For our customers who are working to remain PCI Security compliant for credit card software, this can be a significant issue. We suggest that you evaluate your risks with your Qualified Security Assessors (QSAs).
We have found V6R1 to be possibly our favorite OS/400 version so far, since it seamlessly incorporated so many of the advanced features and extensions that had been added to V5R1 through V5R4. We will miss it. And, we support V7R2, so do not hesitate to upgrade!
