IBM AS/400 Version Information
The releases listed below are all Y2K ready.
V3R6 is not, and V3R1 and earlier releases are not.
V3R2 and earlier are CISC versions.
V3R6 and later are RISC versions.
So far, there is no V3R3, V3R4, or V3R5.
These were reserved in case IBM offers more CISC releases.
Only RISC versions and models have CD-ROM.
There is no standard tape drive for CISC models.
Here are end of service dates; all are Y2K ready:
V3R7 - 6/30/1999
V3R2 - 5/31/2000
V4R1 - 5/31/2000
V4R2 - 5/31/2000
V4R3 - 1/31/2001
V4R4 - 5/31/2001
Common AS/400 CISC hardware models:
Models starting with B, C, D, E, F, and P
(ie: B60, D10, F95, P01)
Models 200, 20S, 300, 30S, 310, 320
Common AS/400 RISC hardware models:
Models starting with S, 4, 5, 6, and 7
(ie: S20, 400, 650)
There are some custom models, and most are CISC,
but don't assume anything.
RISC models are ofter referred to as something like 620-2179.
620 is the model number. 2179 is a processor option for that model.
Some processor options consist of multiple CPU's (processors).
The 650-2343 has 12 CPU's.
Machine Types
9401, 9402, 9404 or 9406 are the AS/400 machine type.
They are irrelevant for our software purposes.
More trivia for the AS/400:
CISC models use 48-bit addressing.
RISC models use 64-bit.
The hardware, operating system, related software and all applications
are compatible. When someone upgrades from CISC to RISC, all
applications (if observability is not removed) are automatically changed
to 64-bit. Unlike Microsoft, UNIX, and all other system implementations,
programs do not need to be modified or recompiled to be 64-bit enabled.
